KwaZulu-Natal disaster management teams are expected to resume their search this morning for two people still missing after severe flooding struck New Hanover on Sunday.
A man and two women were swept away when heavy rains triggered fast-rising floodwaters across the area. The body of one woman was recovered on Monday morning in a river at Shiyasi, while efforts to locate the remaining two continue.
The floods have left widespread destruction in their wake. Entire informal settlements built near riverbanks were washed away, and hundreds of families have been displaced.
Authorities say work is underway to restore electricity to several communities that were plunged into darkness after critical infrastructure was damaged by the floods.
