A damning report by the South African Human Rights Commission has exposed the severe hardships faced by learners across the country, with the Eastern Cape once again emerging as one of the hardest-hit provinces.
At Vulingcobo High School in Dutwya, hundreds of pupils have been forced to sit for their exams outside due to the school’s deteriorating infrastructure. Repeated pleas to provincial education officials for proper facilities have gone unanswered, leaving learners to brave the elements during a critical period in the academic calendar.
The national spotlight on education failures comes as Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube toured schools in Jeffrey’s Bay and surrounding communities on Monday. During the visit, she issued a firm warning to contractors who fail to deliver on infrastructure projects, stressing that non-performance will no longer be tolerated.
The Commission’s findings and the ongoing challenges in the Eastern Cape have intensified calls for urgent intervention to safeguard learners’ rights and restore dignity to the province’s schooling environment.
