KwaZulu-Natal police say they are finalising two dockets for submission to the Provincial Director of Public Prosecutions and the Magistrates Commission as part of a review into the plea agreement granted to controversial businessman Stuart Scharnick.
The plea deal, which resulted in a reduced sentence, has drawn public scrutiny amid questions about how it was negotiated.
Speaking at a media briefing in Durban on Thursday, Acting Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection, Anthony Gopaul, said Scharnick had been implicated in numerous criminal cases, including carjackings and motor vehicle theft.
āIām presenting to you 18 such dockets. When you open each docket, it was syndicated in most of these cases, Mr. Stuart had sold the vehicles. The people found in possession of the cars, in some instances, were linked to him, and in many cases he himself had been in possession before selling them,ā Gopaul said.
The matter will now be referred to prosecutors and the Magistrates Commission for further consideration.
