Three people including a one-year-old child have been wounded in a shooting in Westbury, Johannesburg, after two gunmen reportedly chased their target into a home on Thursday night.
Police say the suspects were pursuing a man who ran into a nearby house seeking refuge. The gunmen followed him inside, firing shots that struck two adults and the child. The man they were chasing managed to escape unharmed.
The victims were taken to hospital and are reported to be in serious but stable condition.
Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says a manhunt is under way.
“A case of attempted murder has been opened after three people, including a one-year-old child, were shot and injured. The suspects followed the man into the house, and the bullets hit three people who were inside. The search for the suspects is underway,” he said.
The incident comes just weeks after two teenagers were killed and five others wounded in a gang-related shooting in the same community. Following that attack, police and government officials visited the area and announced plans to curb ongoing gang violence.
