Argentina’s President Javier Milei will not attend the upcoming G20 Leaders’ Summit in South Africa later this month, his spokesperson has confirmed.
The Argentine government has not provided a reason for Milei’s absence. However, the right-wing leader has previously made clear his close diplomatic alignment with the United States and former President Donald Trump.
Trump announced last week that he would also not attend the summit, nor would he send any US officials. He cited unfounded claims that white Afrikaners are being systematically “killed and slaughtered” in South Africa remarks that have been widely discredited.
In Milei’s absence, Argentina will be represented by Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno at the global gathering of the world’s 20 largest economies.
