The death toll from the devastating floods that struck the Eastern Cape two weeks ago has risen to 100, as search and recovery operations continue across the province.

Officials say efforts remain underway to locate those still missing, while thousands of families grapple with the aftermath of widespread destruction to homes and infrastructure.

Ahmed Bham, Head of Search and Rescue at humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers, confirmed the ongoing recovery efforts. “Yesterday alone, we recovered five bodies, and two the day before. With each passing day, our goal is to bring as much closure as possible to affected families,” he said.

Bham added that search operations have been significantly ramped up this week. “We’ve intensified efforts and deployed additional teams on the ground. Our NGO has now brought in a fourth search and rescue unit to assist with the mission.”

Authorities continue to assess the damage, while support teams work to provide emergency relief and long-term recovery assistance to flood-affected communities.
