ActionSA Parliamentary leader Athol Trollip has welcomed growing political support for the establishment of a commission of inquiry into the state of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), following explosive claims of internal corruption.
This comes after EFF leader Julius Malema wrote to President Cyril Ramaphosa, urging him to investigate the independence and integrity of the prosecuting body. His call follows recent comments by National Director of Public Prosecutions Shamila Batohi, who revealed that the NPA has been “infiltrated” by corrupt prosecutors.
Trollip said Malema’s call aligns with steps already taken by ActionSA to push for accountability.
"It sounds like he’s backing the action we already initiated last week. We wrote to the Minister, the Speaker, and the President, requesting Parliament to convene an urgent inquiry into the NPA," said Trollip.
He added that support from the EFF and other parties strengthens momentum for broader reforms, including proposals to restore prosecutorial independence and revisit the controversial disbanding of the Scorpions.
“I’m very pleased that the EFF has aligned with what we’ve already done. There are growing calls from across the political spectrum to reinforce the independence of the National Director of Public Prosecutions, and to consider removing the Hawks and reviving the Scorpions,” Trollip stated.
The NPA has faced intense scrutiny in recent years over its capacity to prosecute high-profile corruption cases, and the latest revelations have reignited concerns over its internal integrity and effectiveness.
