The Western Cape is set to face a bitterly cold and wet weekend as a powerful cold front sweep across the province from early Saturday, bringing heavy rain, plunging temperatures, and even snowfall in mountainous regions.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned that the front will move in from Saturday morning, with adverse conditions expected to persist through to Monday.

Rainfall is set to intensify from Friday, with isolated showers across the central and southern interior. The heaviest downpours, however, are forecast for Saturday. According to SAWS, rainfall amounts of 10 to 20 mm are anticipated in western parts of the province, with up to 40 mm possible over mountainous areas.

Scattered showers are also expected along the southern coast, including the Garden Route, while the Cape Winelands and Overberg regions may see cloudy conditions turning rainy by late Saturday.

Snow is likely to fall over high-lying areas such as the Cederberg and Matroosberg, and strong winds could create dangerous travel and marine conditions. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and for small stock farmers to take necessary precautions.

“The public and small stock farmers are advised to prepare for cold to very cold, wet, and windy conditions, including snowfall, very rough seas, and strong winds,” SAWS said in a statement.

Potential hazards include flooded roads, disruptions to essential services, and difficult sea navigation due to choppy waters. Emergency services remain on high alert as the province braces for the inclement weather.
