An internal investigation is underway at Spark Schools after coffee and milk supplies in the kitchen of its Rosebank support office were allegedly contaminated with terbufos — a highly toxic insecticide typically used in agriculture.
The discovery has triggered both internal and police investigations, as concerns over staff safety mount. According to sources within the school network, suspicions arose following allegations from an employee who believes the incident may be linked to growing discontent over potential retrenchments. Spark Schools is currently in the process of reviewing 195 positions that could become redundant.
While no injuries have been reported, the company is taking no chances. Staff at the support office have been urged to bring their own coffee, milk, and related supplies until further notice.
Authorities are yet to confirm how the substance was introduced or whether it posed an immediate health threat, but the investigation remains ongoing.
Spark Schools has yet to issue a formal statement but is said to be cooperating fully with law enforcement.
