Urgent Water Outflow Shutdown at Wiggins Treatment Works to Prevent System Collapse

The eThekwini Municipality has announced an urgent shutdown of outflows at the Wiggins Water Treatment Works to prevent a potential system collapse and to build critical storage reserves.

The temporary shutdown, undertaken in partnership with bulk water supplier uMngeni-uThukela, is aimed at increasing water flow to the City’s reservoirs. The decision comes as part of a broader strategy first communicated on 15 May, and such shutdowns will continue periodically until the water system stabilises.

The Municipality anticipates that storage levels will improve overnight, enabling outflows to resume. However, consumers are advised that water supply interruptions may persist during the recovery period.
