The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) has dismissed as false a viral message claiming that the agency is revising speed limits and introducing stricter traffic laws from July.

The widely circulated communique suggests that SANRAL’s so-called "Highway Law" will soon reduce speed limits on various roads — including urban roads to 50 km/h, rural roads to 80 km/h, and national highways to 110 km/h. It also falsely claims that heavy vehicles will be capped at 90 km/h and that school zones will be restricted to 30 km/h during school hours.

In a statement, SANRAL General Manager for Communication and Marketing, Vusi Mona, clarified that the agency has no authority to enforce road laws or set speed limits.

“SANRAL’s mandate is strictly limited to the financing, planning, development, maintenance, and rehabilitation of South Africa’s national road network, as outlined in the SANRAL Act of 1998,” said Mona. “We do not have any enforcement powers related to speed, safety, or security.”

Mona urged the public to verify any suspicious or unverified information by contacting SANRAL’s hotline at 0800 204 508 or via email at sanral@tip-offs.co.za. Members of the media are encouraged to reach out directly to the press office at pressoffice@nra.co.za for accurate information.

The agency has emphasized the importance of relying on official sources to prevent the spread of misinformation.
