A bus driver has died after being shot during a brazen armed robbery in Verulam, north of Durban, on Monday.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), four armed men posing as passengers opened fire on the driver while the bus was travelling along Buffelsdraai Road. The suspects shot him twice before stealing cash and robbing at least 20 passengers of their valuables.
RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram said a passerby witnessed the incident unfold as the bus veered off the road. Upon approaching the scene, he heard gunshots coming from inside the vehicle and discovered that the driver had been shot.
The gunmen fled the scene on foot. Reaction Unit officers conducted a search of the surrounding area, but no arrests have been made.
The injured driver was rushed to hospital by the passerby but later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspects, who remain at large.
