Law enforcement officers rushed to the scene of an attempted cash-in-transit heist on Wednesday morning after gunfire erupted on the N2 highway near Umlazi, south of Durban.
According to reports, an unknown number of suspects ambushed a cash van travelling along the busy route. In response, the vehicle's security guards diverted to a nearby shopping mall for cover.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson confirmed that two people were injured during the incident.
“Paramedics found three occupants from the cash-in-transit vehicle. Two had sustained minor to moderate injuries as a result of the shooting and a collision outside the shopping complex,” Jamieson said.
Emergency personnel treated the injured-on site before transporting them to a nearby hospital for further care.
Police have launched an investigation into the attempted heist. No arrests have been made at this stage.
