Gauteng police have launched an arson investigation after a fire tore through Riverlea Secondary School over the weekend, destroying at least 11 classrooms.
The blaze broke out on Saturday evening and was eventually brought under control by emergency services. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the damage to the school’s infrastructure is extensive.
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. However, authorities are treating the incident as arson, with a specialised team of senior detectives — including members of the Forensic Science Laboratory — assigned to the case.
Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed the development, saying, “The team has been tasked with investigating the cause of the fire and identifying those responsible for this criminal act.”
Law enforcement is appealing to the public for any information that could assist the investigation. Anyone with details is urged to contact Captain Merinah Netshidzati on 071 675 6155, or to submit anonymous tips via the MySAPS App, available on all smartphones.
