Mobile network giant MTN Group has confirmed that it recently experienced a cyberattack that resulted in unauthorised access to personal information belonging to some of its customers.

In a statement, the company revealed that an unidentified third party claimed to have accessed certain parts of its system. While investigations are ongoing, MTN said there is not yet sufficient evidence to determine whether customer accounts or mobile money wallets were directly affected.

Despite the breach, MTN assured users that its core network, billing platforms, and financial services infrastructure remain intact, secure, and fully operational.

The telecommunications provider has since activated its cybersecurity incident response protocols. Law enforcement authorities, including the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Hawks, have been notified, and MTN says it is cooperating with authorities and keeping them updated.

"We are also in the process of notifying affected customers, in line with local legal and regulatory requirements," the company said.

In the meantime, MTN is urging customers to remain vigilant. Users are advised to ignore suspicious messages or links and not to share sensitive details like passwords, PINs, or one-time passwords (OTPs) through unsolicited communication.

The company reiterated its commitment to protecting customer data and enhancing security measures to prevent future breaches.
