Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela is expected to visit the family of a woman who was recently gunned down in a taxi-related incident in Alberton, on the East Rand.
The victim, a taxi operator affiliated with the Katlehong People’s Taxi Association, was also the widow of a man previously killed in similar violence. Her death marks the latest in a growing string of killings linked to taxi industry conflicts in the province.
Since the start of the year, 60 people have been killed in taxi violence across Gauteng — a grim statistic that continues to climb despite recent peace commitments made by industry stakeholders.
Diale-Tlabela’s spokesperson, Lesiba Mpya, expressed deep concern over the ongoing bloodshed.
“This goes against the commitment recently made by the taxi industry to end hostilities,” Mpya said. “It’s an indictment on the promises of peace and stability within the sector.”
He added that the MEC condemns these barbaric acts in the strongest possible terms, calling them a serious setback to efforts aimed at restoring order within the province’s troubled taxi industry.
