The eThekwini Municipality has issued an urgent notice to residents regarding a planned water supply interruption affecting large parts of the city from Tuesday, 8 April to Wednesday, 9 April 2025.

The temporary shutdown is necessary for critical maintenance by the City’s bulk water supplier, uMngeni-uThukela Water (UUW), which will be replacing 1200 mm diameter sales and check meters on the Wiggins Water Treatment Works gravity bulk pipeline.

As part of the process, UUW will drain the reservoir networks ahead of the shutdown. During this period, no water will flow into or out of the affected City reservoirs. This measure aims to reduce reservoir recovery time, although full restoration could take up to two weeks in some areas.

Johannesburg EMS has advised all affected communities to conserve water and prepare in advance by storing sufficient supplies. Water tankers will be dispatched to affected areas where needed.

Areas affected include:

  • Central Reservoirs: Glenwood, Bulwer, Morningside (parts), Overport (parts), Essenwood (parts), Berea (parts), Westridge, Congella, Seaview, Umbilo, Isipingo Beach, Isipingo Hills, Isipingo Rail, Prospecton Industrial, Umlazi (various sections), Lotus Park, Malagazi, Reunion, Durban Airport, Merebank East, Merewent, Mobeni, Beachfront, CBD, and several others including Prince Mshiyeni Hospital.
  • South Reservoirs: Amanzimtoti CBD, Athlone Park, Kingsway Hospital, Illovo (various suburbs), Warner Beach, Umgababa, Umnini, KwaMakhutha, Adams, Zwelisha, Craigieburn, Saiccor Village, and surrounding rural and coastal communities.

Residents are urged to spread the word and assist vulnerable neighbours in preparing for the disruption.

For more information and updates, residents can contact their local ward councillor or monitor the eThekwini Municipality’s official communication platforms.
