Access to clean drinking water remains a significant challenge in the Eastern Cape, with many areas experiencing ongoing water shortages despite the construction of dams. One of the key projects aimed at addressing this issue is the Umzimvubu Dam in the OR Tambo District Municipality, which has faced delays for decades.

Currently, construction has come to a standstill due to a standoff following allegations from local residents that they were excluded from the project. Siyabonga Sigenu, a resident of Siqungqwini village in Tsolo, shared concerns that no work will proceed until their grievances are addressed.

“Our first issue began in 2021 when the project resumed work, and the company hired people from outside our community while local residents were overlooked for employment,” Sigenu explained. “We were forced to protest to demand jobs. Furthermore, the department took land from residents without offering adequate compensation. Those who were promised payment only received R500.”

The ongoing standoff highlights the tensions between the project developers and the local community, complicating efforts to address the region’s water crisis.
