Two disturbing TikTok videos surfaced showing a young boy abusing two dogs. In one video, the boy can be heard threatening to kill the dogs, while in the second, he is seen hitting one of the dogs with a plank featuring a large nail. The footage appeared to have been taken in the Phoenix area.
SAFE, an animal welfare organization, launched an immediate investigation, tracking the original TikTok account associated with the videos. The account pointed to a boy from the KwaMashu area.SAFE shared one of the videos on their social media, asking for public assistance in identifying the suspect or locating the dogs. A reward of R10,000 was offered for information to help locate the animals as quickly as possible.
A volunteer from SAFE engaged in a conversation with someone linked to the TikTok account, who eventually provided an address in KwaMashu, suggesting the location of the suspect. SAFE's team arrived at the property, where they observed a person fleeing the scene. Speaking to residents, one man identified himself as the suspect's brother and expressed shock and anger upon seeing the videos. The suspect’s mother, also disturbed by the incident, confirmed the boy's identity and provided another address in Phoenix, where the dogs might be located.
SAFE arrived in Phoenix and located the two dogs. While the dog's owner was unaware of the abuse, they confirmed that several young children frequent the neighboring house. Both dogs were assessed: the younger one was found to be in good condition, but the older Pitbull cross was severely emaciated and barely able to stand. The dog, a senior with known medical issues, had been receiving regular veterinary care. Despite the dire condition of the older dog, the second dog was not removed from the premises as it was healthy and under veterinary care.
The older Pitbull, named Drake, was immediately transported to Westville Veterinary Clinic for emergency treatment. He is receiving ongoing medical care, including surgery for ingrown eyelids causing major eye infections. Further veterinary investigations are planned, including ultrasounds.
Actions Being Taken:
- A case is being opened against the young boy in the video and the person filming, under the Animal Protection Act. The suspect’s details will be handed over to authorities for further investigation. The dog's owner has been encouraged to open a case as well.
- A case of neglect and failure to provide proper veterinary care is being opened against the dog's owner, following veterinary findings on the dog's condition.
As this is an ongoing investigation, further details will be released in accordance with legal protocols. Updates on Drake's condition and the situation with the second dog will continue to be shared.
Shaun, a fully registered Animal Welfare Inspector, will oversee the case, and all findings will be passed on to the NSPCA for further action. Charges will be pressed as per the investigation’s findings.
Drake’s Recovery and Donations:
Neither dog will be rehomed at this time. Drake, in particular, has a long road ahead for recovery, with chronic medical needs. His condition requires ongoing care, including potential lifelong medication. He will also undergo surgery for his eye condition.
SAFE has paid the R10,000 reward into Drake's vet account as a deposit for his care, and additional donations will go directly toward his treatment. Proof of donations will be posted on SAFE's social media channels for transparency.
SAFE is committed to advocating for the well-being of both dogs and will continue to monitor their conditions as well as pursue justice for the abuse they endured.
SAFE remains dedicated to both animals' recovery and will continue to provide updates on the investigation and Drake’s progress.
