The Umzimkhulu River Bridge will officially close at 3:00 PM today to undergo critical emergency repairs and rehabilitation. The bridge, built in 1958 using the old caisson construction system, has been deemed unstable due to prolonged rainfall and flooding that weakened its piers.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, announced the closure, emphasizing the need to ensure public safety. The repairs aim to restore the bridge’s durability for at least another 25 years.

Key Measures Announced:

  • Alternative Route: Motorists will use the P464 route while awaiting approval for toll fee waivers at Oribi Toll Gate’s North and South ramps.
  • Repair Timeline & Budget: The six-month project has been allocated R190 million, with work set to begin on May 11, 2025, pending permit approval.
  • Community Impact & Employment: Around 121 local workers will be employed for 528 days, earning a combined R11.7 million. Emerging contractors will receive contracts worth approximately R7.6 million.
  • Public Engagement: A liaison committee will be established by March 28, 2025, to ensure community representation in the project.
  • Security Measures: The South African Police Service has vowed to act firmly against any criminal elements attempting to disrupt the project.

Duma acknowledged that the closure would affect all residents but stressed the importance of prioritizing public safety and long-term infrastructure stability. Authorities are urging cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure the project's successful completion.
