Two Somali national businessmen have been arrested after a stolen shipping container filled with construction equipment was recovered on the M4 in La Mercy on Wednesday afternoon.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a report of an ongoing theft at a construction site on Cangleglow Place around 5:52 PM. Responding officers were informed that a white Isuzu crane truck had loaded the container and was heading towards the M4, closely followed by the owner of the stolen property.

Upon arrival, RUSA members found that the construction company owner had stopped the truck. The driver claimed he had been hired by the two suspects to transport the container to a rural area north of Durban and was allegedly paid R15,000 for the job.

The suspects, who were passengers in the vehicle, told officers they intended to convert the container into a tuck shop. They also reportedly own multiple tuck shops and general stores.

Police arrived at the scene and arrested the two men, while the truck driver was taken to Tongaat SAPS for further questioning. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
