Allegations of sexual misconduct against Advocate Jeremy Gauntlett have been referred to the Johannesburg Society of Advocates and the Cape Bar for further investigation.
Gauntlett is accused of sexually abusing Wits lecturer Hylton White when White was a teenager. The General Council of the Bar has expressed deep concern over the allegations but, as a federal organization, has delegated the investigation to regional bodies.
In response to the claims, Gauntlett has resigned from an Anglican Church panel investigating sexual abuse of children within the church. His decision to step down has been accepted by Cape Town Archbishop Thabo Makgoba.
The matter continues to draw widespread attention as legal and ecclesiastical bodies conduct their inquiries.
