The community of Merebank is reeling from the brutal murder of Nivin Pillay, a well-known priest who was found stabbed multiple times on Saturday. Pillay, a former Umkomaas resident, had recently relocated to Merebank. His body was discovered on a grassy patch in Punjab Circle, sparking immediate concern among local residents.

PT Alarms reported that their control room received numerous calls about the incident, prompting a swift response from their officers, K9 unit members, armed response teams, and Wentworth police. Upon arrival, they found Pillay, a resident of the area, with apparent stab wounds. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, with police continuing their investigation.

Community leader Sharin Rajman expressed her shock, describing Pillay as a kind-hearted and respectful individual who was deeply beloved in the community. “He was always there to help anyone who needed him. His loss is devastating,” Rajman said. “It’s hard to understand how such an incident could occur in an area with a high presence of CPF members, security personnel, and police officers. I hope the perpetrator is caught and justice prevails.”

Wentworth SAPS spokesperson, Captain Mbuso Gumede, confirmed that a murder investigation is underway.

Pillay’s funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at 30 Jacaranda Avenue, Roseneath, Umkomaas, from 10am to 2pm. The community continues to mourn the loss of a respected figure who touched many lives.
