On his last full day in office, U.S. President Joe Biden traveled to South Carolina, where he attended services at a historically Black church to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Addressing the congregation, Biden urged Americans to "keep the faith in a better day to come" and reaffirmed his commitment to racial progress.
South Carolina played a key role in Biden’s 2020 presidential nomination, and he credited Representative Jim Clyburn for his endorsement. While he received a warm welcome, a small group protested his handling of the Gaza conflict.
Biden also addressed a new ceasefire in Gaza and discussed Israel’s actions against Hezbollah in Lebanon. In one of his final acts as president, he pardoned Marcus Garvey, a historic Black leader convicted of mail fraud in the 1920s.
