Police in Limpopo have vowed to dismantle drug syndicates operating in the province, addressing growing concerns from community members about rising crime levels.
In a significant breakthrough, the Hawks uncovered what is believed to be Africa’s largest illicit drug manufacturing laboratory in Groblersdal in July. Authorities seized drugs and manufacturing equipment valued at over two billion rand during the raid.
Five individuals, including three Mexican nationals, are currently on trial for their alleged involvement in the operation.
Provincial Police Commissioner General Jan Scheepers commended the collaborative efforts of law enforcement and local communities. “You can see that we are really making breakthroughs, and that is with the help from communities. We cannot do this on our own. The majority of these arrests involve our detectives, tactical support teams, crime intelligence, and other units working together,” he said.
Scheepers also highlighted the diverse nature of those implicated in drug-related crimes, stating, “It’s a mixed group. Some of them are foreign nationals. In the Groblersdal case, for example, there were three Mexicans. It’s a mix of South Africans and individuals from other countries, some of whom are legally in the country, while others are here illegally.”
Authorities have reiterated their call for community support to combat crime and ensure the safety and security of residents across the province.
