The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) in the Western Cape will kick off its road safety campaign in Philippi today, aiming to promote safe driving practices ahead of the busy festive season.

Regional Chairperson Mandla Hermanus announced that the campaign, themed "Your Safety, Our Priority," will include vehicle inspections at the Joe Gqabi long-distance interchange. The initiative seeks to reduce road crashes during one of the year's peak travel periods by ensuring that taxis are roadworthy and meet safety standards.

Hermanus emphasized the importance of increased inspections to improve road safety and prevent accidents. This comes as the Western Cape government also launched its own road safety campaign last month, targeting drunk driving and speeding.

Traffic officials will be out in full force during the festive season, supported by other law enforcement agencies. Roadblocks will be set up at high-risk areas to monitor driver fatigue and inspect vehicles for roadworthiness.
