Johannesburg Water has warned that Level 2 water restrictions may soon be implemented, as demand for water continues to exceed the system's supply capacity.

Senior manager Logan Munsamy highlighted that the city currently consumes over 1.7 million liters of water per day, a demand significantly higher than what the system is able to provide. This persistent gap is putting strain on the city's water infrastructure, prompting the utility to take action.

As part of its efforts to address the issue, Johannesburg Water has launched a disconnection initiative targeting illegal water connections. The utility has reported significant water losses due to defaulters and hijacked buildings. Recently, about 20 buildings in the Johannesburg CBD were disconnected for illegal use, and the authority has indicated that more areas will be inspected in the coming weeks.

The utility's measures aim to reduce water wastage and ensure a more sustainable water supply for the city.
