The Cape Winelands District Municipality’s Fire Services are still fighting a persistent fire along Mitchell’s Pass, located outside Ceres in the Boland region of the Western Cape.
Spokesperson Jo-Anne Otto reported that cooler nighttime temperatures have assisted in containing the fire, which is running parallel to the road. However, active fires are still burning at the peak of the mountain on the Tulbagh side.
Otto added that the fire line, which had been above the old toll house, has crossed over the mountain peak and is now impacting the Tulbagh side. Fire teams have encountered dense mist over the mountain this morning, hindering their ability to assess the situation. The fire line on the left flank has moved toward an old protea plantation situated between two rivers.
Firefighting teams remain hopeful that the fire will eventually burn itself out once it reaches the rivers, though they continue to monitor and manage the fire line actively.
