Eskom has suffered a staggering loss of over R800 million due to consumers in Nelson Mandela Bay bypassing prepaid electricity meters. The revelation was confirmed by the city’s mayor.
Speaking on the issue, the mayor noted that many of the residents responsible for meter tampering are now rushing to Eskom offices in long queues to update their prepaid meters at the last minute.
“The same residents who bypassed their meters are now the ones crowding our offices to ensure their prepaid electricity meters are updated before the deadline,” the mayor said.
The utility’s significant financial loss highlights the ongoing challenges Eskom faces in combating electricity theft, which has a severe impact on its already strained resources. Authorities are calling for stricter measures to prevent future tampering and ensure accountability.
