The eThekwini Metro has reassured prepaid electricity customers that fines for tampered meters will be enforced but dismissed claims of a blanket R12,000 penalty.

The clarification comes as Durban residents scramble to comply with Eskom’s looming Sunday deadline to recode their prepaid meters. Long queues have formed across the city as customers seek assistance and clarity on the recoding process.

The metro emphasized its commitment to addressing meter tampering while urging residents to ensure their meters are compliant before the deadline to avoid disruptions in service.

Eskom’s recoding initiative is part of a nationwide effort to update the electricity vending system, with a particular focus on curbing illegal meter activities.
