A taxi blockade is causing significant traffic disruptions throughout the Durban Central Business District (CBD), with multiple roads being obstructed by taxis. The cause of the protest remains unclear, and it is uncertain if it is related to a prior blockade that occurred at Durban Station on Monday.

Minibuses that previously blocked routes near Spaghetti Junction have since been cleared, but traffic has come to a standstill in several areas, including 75 Langalibalele Dube Street. The highway at the EB Cloete interchange is also closed, compounding the difficulties for commuters.

Durban metro police spokesperson Boysie Zungu stated that authorities are actively monitoring the situation, noting that while the protests involve route closures, there is no threat of violence. He advised motorists to avoid the M4 south and Victoria Embankment, which are heavily affected by the blockade.

One motorist described a close call at Spaghetti Junction, recounting how taxis began slowing down before blocking the road with barriers. “When they did stop, gentlemen jumped out of the taxis and started pushing the yellow construction barriers onto the road. Fortunately, I managed to drive over them before they fully blocked the route,” the driver shared.

The taxi protest is extending from the YMCA area, passing Alice and Grey Streets, and continuing down to Victoria Embankment, leading to widespread delays and frustration among commuters. Authorities are urged to continue monitoring the situation as it develops.
