The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms and excessive lightning in Gauteng today, following a week of intense heatwave conditions. Temperatures in the region had soared into the mid-30s, creating dry and dangerous conditions.
Weather forecaster Letlhogonolo Thobela explained that the heatwave, which primarily affected the north-eastern provinces, ended yesterday, paving the way for today's stormy weather. "The heatwave was mainly for the north-eastern provinces, but the conditions lasted up until yesterday, and it has just reached a breaking point today," said Thobela.
The warning covers not only Gauteng but also parts of the north-eastern Free State, eastern North West, Mpumalanga, and the south-western areas of Limpopo. Despite the low likelihood of the storm occurring, Thobela cautioned that its impact could be severe, with heavy downpours expected throughout the afternoon and into the evening.
Forecaster Celeste Fourie noted that temperatures have begun to drop in some areas, bringing relief from the heatwave. However, active thunderstorms have already been reported in southern Gauteng, and storm activity is expected to increase by 60% on Tuesday.
"This Yellow Level 4 warning indicates a low likelihood of severe weather, but the impact could be significant," said Fourie. "Given that this is the first significant rainfall of the season following a heatwave, the dry ground could lead to runoff and localized flooding. Residents, particularly in flood-prone areas, should be cautious and remain alert for any developing weather conditions."
Authorities are urging residents to take precautionary measures, especially when traveling, as heavy rain and flash flooding may occur in vulnerable areas.
