The City of Tshwane Emergency Services have been deployed to tackle a massive fire after a 38,000-liter diesel tanker caught alight on the N4 westbound highway near the M17 intersection in Pretoria North. The blaze, which broke out earlier today, has led to the temporary closure of the N4 highway, with motorists being advised to seek alternative routes. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
Multiple agencies, including Tshwane Metro Police and Gauteng Traffic Police, are on the scene to assist with managing the situation and ensure public safety.
Lindsay Mnguni, spokesperson for the City of Tshwane Emergency Services, reported that the emergency communication center received the alert at 09:54 a.m. Firefighting units were immediately dispatched from various stations, including Rosslyn, Wonderboom, Innesdale, Central, Themba, and Ga-Rankuwa Fire Stations.
The firefighting resources deployed to the scene include two fire engines, two water tankers, a foam tender, a water carrier, two rapid intervention units, two hazardous materials units, a district commander’s unit, and a mobile command unit. Mnguni also confirmed that Madibeng Fire Services are assisting with the ongoing firefighting efforts.
Authorities are working to bring the blaze under control and ensure the highway is safe for reopening.
