Bulk water supplier Rand Water has urged municipalities in Gauteng to reduce water loss by 33%, following alarming findings from the No Drop report. This comes in response to a sharp decline in water storage levels across the province, exacerbated by excessive water wastage.

Rand Water has warned that its supply systems, including reservoirs, are now critically low, and the ongoing heatwave threatens to worsen the situation.

Makenosi Maroo, spokesperson for Rand Water, called for urgent action from municipalities, including fixing leaks, enforcing local by-laws, and addressing illegal water connections. "Rand Water would like to alert communities, particularly in Gauteng, that water storage could soon be depleted if municipalities do not implement our recommendations," said Maroo. "It is essential to act now to prevent an impending disaster. We have communicated through letters, held meetings, and participated in discussions with municipalities to address the issue."

The warning comes as the utility continues to emphasize the need for immediate measures to prevent further strain on water supplies in Gauteng.
