The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has highlighted several challenges its road construction teams face daily as they work on major projects along the N2 and N3 highways in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). These obstacles include high traffic volumes, adverse weather conditions, and shortages of construction materials.

According to SANRAL Project Manager Ravi Ronny, there are currently nine active projects on the N2 and N3, with a total of 24 planned. "We estimate that between the N2 and N3, we can spend around R52 billion, with half of these contracts already under construction," said Ronny.

These projects, which began about three years ago, have provided job opportunities to local communities, benefiting areas such as eThekwini, Pietermaritzburg, and uMdloti.

However, Ronny noted the difficulties in managing traffic alongside large-scale construction, balancing material availability, and dealing with climate-related disruptions like heavy rainfall. "Managing traffic with construction is always challenging due to the size of these projects. Material shortages are another issue, and while we’ve managed community disruptions along the N2 and N3 corridors well, unseasonal weather events have been a significant challenge," he explained.

Currently, seven projects are underway on the N3 between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, while two projects are being carried out on the N2, including the KwaMashu to uMdloti and Cloete Interchange upgrades in eThekwini.
