Civil society groups, united under the 'Joburg Crisis Alliance,' are demanding the resignation of Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda. The alliance, which includes the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation and the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA), claims that Gwamanda has exacerbated the city's service delivery issues.

The call for Gwamanda's resignation follows ActionSA's agreement to collaborate with the African National Congress (ANC) in the Johannesburg metropolitan area if the mayor is removed. ActionSA, led by Herman Mashaba, has also indicated its willingness to support a proposed R2.5-billion loan to the city, which is expected to be discussed at a council meeting on Thursday.

Previously, ActionSA opposed the financing from the French development agency Agence Française de Développement (ADF), arguing that the loan would place a financial burden on ratepayers for the next 15 years.
