A significant cache of contraband was discovered during a raid at the Johannesburg Correctional Services Centre on Wednesday night. The operation, conducted by the Department of Correctional Services in conjunction with the South African Police Service (SAPS), highlights ongoing concerns about illegal activities within prison facilities.

National Commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale, emphasized that inmates found with contraband jeopardize their chances of rehabilitation and eligibility for parole. "We cannot release prisoners who are not rehabilitated," he stated, underscoring the department's commitment to ensuring that inmates meet strict criteria before being considered for release.

Thobakgale also announced that additional raids are planned in other prisons identified as hotspots for contraband. These actions are part of a broader effort to maintain order and uphold the integrity of the correctional system.
