A Grade 7 student, Clair Aucamp, tragically passed away in hospital on Saturday after falling from a second-floor balcony at Laerskool Mayville. The incident occurred last Thursday.
The school expressed its sorrow in a Facebook post, extending heartfelt condolences to Aucamp's family. "It is with broken hearts that we must inform you that Clair has passed away. We want to express our deepest condolences to her family and loved ones. We pray for God's comfort at this time and request that you give her family space to process this loss. Please keep them in your prayers," the post read.
School management acknowledged the trauma experienced by students following the incident. The Gauteng Department of Education is aware of the situation and has provided guidance to parents on supporting their children through this difficult time.
Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Gauteng Department of Health, confirmed that Aucamp was airlifted to Milpark Hospital but unfortunately did not survive. "We are deeply concerned about this tragic event. Our Psycho-Social Support team has been sent to the school to provide support to those affected. We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident," Mabona said.
In a separate incident, 17-year-old Tlhokomelo Phasa died from a chest injury sustained during a weekend match. Phasa, a player for West Youth Academy, was struck in the chest by the ball and could not be revived despite medical efforts. The academy has confirmed his death and expressed their condolences.
