The South African National Council for the Blind has voiced grave concerns over a troubling trend of extortion targeting individuals with disabilities in the Eastern Cape. Residents in Mthatha have reported being coerced into paying for protection, highlighting a disturbing pattern of exploitation.

Lewis Nzimande, Executive Director of the National Council for the Blind, expressed his alarm over the situation. “This issue has been ongoing for some time, and despite bringing it to the attention of the police station commander, little progress has been made. Our members are in dire need of assistance, and it is crucial that the matter is addressed promptly,” Nzimande stated.
