The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation has urged political parties to prioritize the welfare of South Africans above their own agendas.

This call comes as the National Assembly prepares for its session on Friday, during which a new President and Speaker will be elected. Zusipe Batyi, the Foundation's communications manager, emphasizes that discussions regarding the formation of a new government should prioritize the needs of the people. Batyi highlights the importance of seeking guidance from previous leaders who participated in pre-democracy negotiations to navigate future steps wisely. Meanwhile, the African National Congress (ANC) has expressed its intention to involve a coalition of opposition parties in the government following its loss of majority in the May 29 elections.

However, political analysts caution that significant efforts are required for the proposed government of national unity to be effective.
