Judges Matter Sets High Standards for Maya as Chief Justice.
The judiciary watchdog, Judges Matter, has specific expectations for Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya as she steps into the role of Chief Justice.
Judges Matter anticipates hearing Maya’s plans during her interview with the Judicial Service Commission for the Chief Justice position today.
Maya, nominated by President Cyril Ramaphosa in February, is the sole candidate for the role. The interview coincides with the upcoming expiration of Chief Justice Raymond Zondo’s 12-year non-renewable term at the end of August.
Mbekezeli Benjamin from Judges Matter stated, "We are looking for Justice Maya's plans for the judiciary, particularly addressing several pressing issues. One critical area is the governance and administration of the judiciary. At last year's judges' conference, the top resolution was to ensure that the judiciary’s administration falls under the judges' control."
"The second pressing issue is handling misconduct cases against judges. With the recent impeachment of two judges, there is significant pressure to ensure the system operates efficiently and effectively. It has taken too long to address complaints against judges, and we expect her to expedite improvements to this system."
