Every year on the 1st of December, the world comes together to mark World AIDS Awareness Day—a day dedicated to remembering lives lost, supporting those living with HIV, and renewing our collective commitment to ending the stigma and the epidemic itself.

This day serves as a powerful reminder that HIV is not just a medical condition—it is a human story. It affects families, friends, communities, and nations. While progress in treatment and prevention has transformed what it means to live with HIV, millions around the world continue to face barriers such as discrimination, lack of access to healthcare, and misinformation.

World AIDS Awareness Day calls on each of us to stand in solidarity, to educate ourselves and others, and to champion compassion over judgment. It encourages open conversations, early testing, and support for those who need it most. It is through knowledge, empathy, and unity that we will continue to make strides toward a world free of AIDS.

As we light candles, wear red ribbons, and honour the resilience of those impacted, let us also look forward—with hope, with understanding, and with a commitment to action.

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GBV

A Global Call to End Violence Against Women and Gender-Based Violence

Every year, from 25 November to 10 December, the world unites for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, an international campaign that calls for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and all forms of gender-based violence (GBV).

Why These 16 Days Matter

Gender-based violence remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations worldwide. It cuts across geography, culture, age, and socio-economic status. From domestic abuse, sexual harassment, and femicide to child marriage, human trafficking, and online abuse, millions of women and girls face threats to their safety and dignity every day.

The 16 Days of Activism serve as a reminder that GBV is not inevitable—it is preventable. These days urge us to reflect, advocate, and take action. They call on communities to challenge harmful norms, on leaders to strengthen policies and accountability, and on individuals to speak up, support survivors, and demand change.

This Year’s Theme: A Renewed Call for Action

While themes vary across regions and organizations each year, the message remains the same:
End violence. Support survivors. Strengthen prevention. Promote equality.

Campaigns around the world highlight the importance of survivor-centered approaches, investment in prevention programs, accessible support services, and education that empowers youth to challenge discrimination and promote healthy relationships.

Raising awareness is only the first step. The heart of the 16 Days campaign is action—tangible steps that create meaningful change. This includes:

• Strengthening legislation and enforcement so that perpetrators are held accountable.

• Expanding shelters, hotlines, and medical and psychological support for survivors.

• Investing in prevention programs that teach equality, consent, and respect.

• Mobilizing men and boys as allies in ending violence.

• Supporting women’s rights organizations, which are often the first responders in crises.

• Building safer digital spaces to combat online harassment and cyber-violence.

• Encouraging bystander intervention, giving communities the tools to safely speak out and prevent harm.

Each action—small or large—helps to shift social norms, strengthen systems, and protect lives.

Ending violence against women and GBV is not the responsibility of survivors alone. It requires the commitment of entire societies. It calls on all of us to challenge harmful stereotypes, to support survivors with dignity and compassion, and to advocate relentlessly for justice and equality.

The 16 Days of Activism remind us that progress is possible. Around the world, activists continue to push boundaries, break silence, and create safer, more equitable communities. Their work shows us that change is not only necessary—it is achievable.

While these 16 days are a powerful rallying point, the fight must continue year-round. Ending gender-based violence demands sustained effort, continuous education, and long-term investment. It requires empathy, courage, and the belief that a world free from violence is within reach.

Because when we stand together—across communities, borders, and generations—we send a powerful message:

Violence has no place in our world. Equality, safety, and dignity are the rights of everyone.
