Mandela Day: Honouring a Legacy of Service and Humanity
Each year on July 18th, South Africans and people around the world come together to celebrate Mandela Day — a day dedicated to remembering the life, values, and global legacy of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, South Africa’s first democratically elected president and an enduring symbol of peace, justice, and reconciliation.
What is Mandela Day?
Mandela Day was officially declared by the United Nations in 2009, on Nelson Mandela’s birthday, as an international day of activism. Rather than being a public holiday, it is a call to action, urging individuals to make a positive impact in their communities, even in small ways.
The day is inspired by Mandela’s own words:
“It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it.”
The central idea is simple yet powerful: everyone has the ability to make a difference. The Mandela Day campaign encourages people to devote 67 minutes of their time to community service — one minute for each year that Mandela spent in public service, from 1942 until his retirement in 2009.
Why 67 Minutes?
Mandela dedicated 67 years of his life to fighting for social justice — from his early days as a human rights lawyer, through 27 years in prison, to leading South Africa into democracy and reconciliation. By giving 67 minutes of service, individuals symbolically honor his legacy by contributing to the kind of world he dreamed of — one grounded in freedom, equality, and dignity for all.
